Liberty Main Street

Main Street Liberty was once a busy and thriving business center.  Recently it has fallen on hard economic times and buildings have fallen into disrepair.  As we visited the businesses, however, we found that the people were welcoming and positive!  And that was nice to hear.

I would love to see old Main Street pictures from the 1940’s….that would perhaps show my Dad’s barber pole outside his shop at what was then 8 North Main. I believe there was a pole on the street-curb as well as a small one by the door. It was, at that time a big shop with a pool table room in back. In later years, my Dad, Anthony DeFilippi divided part of the store for Elliott & Johnson Jewelry. My mom had many beautiful pieces of jewelry that Dad bought for her. After that the jewelry store became a beauty shop run by Ann Grossman till it became Ryhthm In Color.

I’ m very impressed with the momentum that the Spirit of Liberty has obtained with the cooperation of the Village Board and the Town Supervisor. I wish I knew at the moment, the names of the teachers at the Liberty high school who are working with the wonderful senior students who are studying government. Those students eagerly participated in the clean-up day sponsored by the Spirit of Liberty, and were there, the night of the STAR lighting…..I could hug these young men and women to see their spirit, their engagement and their delight in pursuit of our common goal…..love of our hometown.
